Hemingway’s House across the street is more famous. But, you might enjoy your visit to the Key West Lighthouse more! The view from the top is terrific, and the nearby lighthouse keeper’s home is a beautifully restored historic monument. 88 Steps To A View
Small but charming, the Key West Lighthouse museum is all stained wood and delightfully creaky. And, on a June afternoon, it’s also splendidly air-conditioned!  If  you do climb the lighthouse, there are 88 steps up to the viewing area, and  10 more steps to the light. The last 10 are closed to the public.

The lighthouse itself was built in 1847, replacing an original wooden tower on Whitehead Point that had been destroyed the year before by a hurricane. Originally built 66 feet high, it had an additional 20 feet added in 1894. The lighthouse served until being de-commissioned by the Coast Guard in 1969. The tower was restored in 1989 and is again functioning with a 175 watt metal halide light which can be seen several miles out at sea.

Built in 1887, the lighthouse keeper’s quarters  houses the official  museum collection of artifacts, as well as the “maritime history of the Keys”.

These charming fish are handmade out of salvaged fences by Connecticut artist Sharon Kern Sharpe. Each is hand-painted and a true work of art! Each set has a colorful personality … caribbean style in pastels; aquamarine & coastal colors of the sea; and lakeside colors of forest green and deep blues. These fish sculpture are approximately 3 inches wide by 23 inches long.

Because of the handmade nature of these fish, the colors will vary slightly. Each fish is signed and dated on the back by “SKS” .

Local Florida Keys artists, Nadine and Glenn Lahti decided to take an art course at the Community College in 2003. Since 2003 they have done over 60 art shows and feature their work in five galleries from Key West to Key Largo.

Unusual Aging Process
We take older traps, break them down and use the weathered wood to make the frames, taking care to keep the staples, nails, and other fasteners in the wood. All the barnacles,  rust, crustaceans, and character on the wood is natural. We varnish or white-wash them to make them suitable for use to complement any piece of artwork.

Because of the unusual aging process of the wood, no two frames are the same!
